The Only Place from Which You Can Ask For Help…

Have you had any experience with this? Sometimes you go about your day thinking “I feel fine, everything’s working as it should be.” But once you get onto your yoga mat… well, let’s just say it can be surprising how “so not fine” the body suddenly feels when you take it through a series of movements that don’t resemble sitting on your bum all day or holding an instrument.

A BLISSFUL SENSE OF IGNORANCE

I hear this a lot from other musicians as well: “Yoga really highlights the things I cannot do.” And it makes sense. The movements in your daily life can be very one-sided: sitting, sitting down holding an instrument, driving, typing, etc. Not a whole lot of variety. All this can lull you into a state of blissful ignorance. And tell me if I’m wrong but the fact that you’re reading a Musicians’ Yoga blog makes me think this is not your preferred way of operating.

WHAT’S THE ANTIDOTE?

The opposite of ignorance is awareness. But what is awareness actually? It’s simply the ability to create space and position yourself as an observer, a witness to what’s going on. I say this a lot, everything starts with awareness. First, you need to become aware of an issue because it’s the only place from which you’re able to ask for help.

TRAINING YOUR AWARENESS MUSCLE

Awareness is kind of like a muscle that you have to train and I hate to tell you this, but there’s no shortcut between ignorance and suddenly becoming Buddha. It takes time and practice. The good news? Yoga is one of the great tools for cultivating awareness. If you’re already a yoga practitioner, congratulations, you’ve got a head start

WHERE THE REAL IMPACT LIES

But I don’t want you to stop there. Instead, I want to encourage you to take that awareness you so carefully cultivated during your yoga practice off the mat and into your life because that’s where you’ll see it having the most impact. And so that this is not just all talk, I’m sharing one of my favorite tools for cultivating awareness of the body with you.
